What our guests say!!!
"My teen daughter and I spent 8 nights at this underrated (by some earlier reviewers on this site) 2 star accomodation and our satisfaction level is 5 stars. Jane and Philip are the kiwi owners and they, and their Fijian/Fijian indian staff, gave a perfect demonstration of how to deliver calm and attentive service without invading your space. Everybody - including the three dogs and a cat - just exuded calm ‘Fiji time’ with constant genuine smiles and anticipation of your needs. Our room was pleasant, clean and comfortable (7 metres by 5 metres) with air-con, fridge, jug and tea/coffee/sugar/creamer, shower/toilet/sink, and a balcony; which went well with an evening glass of wine, or two! – I could listen to Rogo playing guitar and singing down at the pool while I sipped. Ours had a queen and a single bed. It was serviced daily with a top up of the tea/coffee and we were asked if we’d like the sheets changed. Leave a towel by the waste basket and it gets replaced with a clean one. The Coriander Café is a real treat with a great selection of dishes (tuna and salad wrap with a lime coriander mayo was one of our favourites) and many dishes were cooked with fruit - pineapple, papaya and banana – which was very yummy and something I am going to experiment with at home. Prices are good with lunches around $10 Fiji or less and mains around $20 or less. Breakfast was included in our package (we loved the muesli topped with loads of fruit – the Fijian pineapple is really ripe and tasty) and scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection. We could upgrade to a full cooked breakfast for $8 and we often had this along with the muesli and shared. In fact we shared dishes for every meal and it was so enjoyable. If you go to their website – www.beachsideresortfiji.com - you can see photos of the menu board. Breakfast was available until 10.30, which we really appreciated. If you fancy a change then Club Fiji is just 10 minutes walk along the road and they have a Mongolian menu once a week (I think they take casuals) and JBs Pizza Restaurant and Bar just next door does a great 14 inch pizza for $18 (it really is enough for two) and their cocktails are the real deal at $14. JBs is on stilts right on the beach so you have great views. The Beachside Resort is a great place if you just want to chill out around the pool and read (I read 4 books and my daughter managed 7 – there is also a big supply in the office to borrow), there is no nightlife unless you want to get a $7 taxi to Nadi about 10 minutes away.
We had a surprise guest with us; Cyclone Mick chose to visit on Monday, our second day, (which was actually exciting, watching the coconut palms trying to get horizontal) but unfortunately he took out the power for the whole of Viti Levu and we had 3 very hot & sticky nights without air-con. To try and survive we left the doors open overnight and it seems that Mick also brought all his sandfly mates with him and we both got badly bitten. The cyclone didn’t phase Jane, Philip or the staff and everything just carried on as normal, with just a downsizing of the menu options available until the power returned on the 18th. The staff behaved just the same, which was impressive as we knew many of their homes had been flooded and across Viti Levu over 2,000 people were evacuated to emergency accomodation – fortunately the death toll was in single figures.
On Friday (fabulous weather these last three days) we took a daytrip to Beachcomber island for just $105; a tiny tropical island paradise with great amenities and a fabulous buffet lunch included. We went out in a glass bottomed boat and fed hundreds of Beggar Fish and Yellow Striped Surgeon Fish by hand with stale bread and felt them nibble at our fingers. Some people snorkelled amongst them and one teen girl was overwhelmed and pannicked, having to be lifted out. My daughter got quite sunburned and, back at Beachside, the lovely evening cook offered to bring her dinner up to our room – this was so kind and very much appreciated, thank you.
Some earlier reviewers have been quite negative about Beachside (even complaining about the geckos and cane toads – we thought they were cute) and whatever disappointments that they may have had with the staff are certainly out of date now. Thank you Jane, Philip, Vili, Joti, Fareda, Mosh, Ashok, Dorini and Ash.
